Recounting the war from Homer to the present has always been a big challenge. We, the Argentinians have a lot of true and fictional literature around The Malvinas’ war. Nancy Fiorillo achieves a great originality in this novel. She chooses to narrate through a teenager who tells her childhood experience with a brother, soldier fighting in the Islands. The war comes to her in a fragmentary way, news, her brother’s letters, parents’ voices, family members and neighbours. If the narrative of a war comes fragmentary, more so if the receiver is a little girl. “Heroes’ Orphanhood” achives, at the same time, to reconstruct the experiences of several soldiers in the war and the experiences of their direct family members. Nancy Fiorillo captures with great mastery the complexity, emotions and crossroads that the characters live. The novel starts when Andrea, the protagonist, finds in her grandmother’s house recently deceased, the diary that she wrote, many years ago, about the days of the war between Argentinians and British. Then a family member arrives and revealing dialogues arise with events of the war and the fate of some exfighters friends. Excellently reconstructed characters and period, fluid and precise prose, a novel to read “in one go”.   An exceptional look at this conflict. Now Argentina has the first story about the Malvinas’ war through the “eyes” of a little girl. A novel which could be a story and a family’s experience written with brilliance and narrative mastery that locates “Heroes’ Orphanhood” among the best novels of its kind.
